A while back we were at a friend’s house admiring an antique piece of art on his wall, which seemed to be a painted lithograph mounted on wood, or some other mixed media technique, which doesn’t matter at all to the scope of this project. What caught our eye was the great script lettering spelling out the name Akron in The Akron Brewing Co. title at the bottom of the artwork. “That sure would make a great t-shirt,” we thought.
We took a photo and did a rough tracing, making a few changes, adjusting the stroke weight to be a little more consistent, and playing up the sharp curves of the original. Then we did a quick and dirty vector tracing of that sketch, before polishing it in our favorite font program Glyphs.
The final lettering turned out rather nice. We filed the project away to work on other things until an opportunity came up to design a t-shirt celebrating Akron’s bicentennial anniversary. It was a perfect fit. And the final design even teases a work-in-progress font for the rest of the lettering on the shirt design.
You can find the shirt at Rubber City Clothing.
