It probably goes without saying that we have an interest in typography here at OKTHX. One of our hobbies is collecting vintage wood and metal type along with a couple of small letterpress printing presses and more or less learning how to use them. And, as often happens when a hobby takes on a life of its own, we found ourselves with the bright idea of making the hobby an actual thing, with products we could sell or offer as fun additions to client projects or give away for the fun of it.
Living in Akron, we have neighborhood names that end with “Heights,” and it’s fairly common to look up and see a blimp flying over the studio. In fact, Akron has a long association with the aeronautics industry, including massive airships that predated the much smaller blimps. We liked the optimism of aiming for the heights, so we settled on The Heights Press.
For the logo, we designed a square lockup pulled from our collection of vintage wood type. We printed a few impressions, picked the best one, and scanned it.
We then drew vector outlines of the letters using the scan as a guide. Slight adjustments were made to the letter shapes and spacing. The word PRESS was emboldened to balance out THE. Finally, the new digital lockup was set inside a thick square stroke.
A color palette was inspired by orange paper stock we had on hand, along with colors of the wood type and a rich black as a primary accent.
Having a logo makes a thing feel real. Want to use letterpress as an inspiration for your logo? Let’s see what heights we can achieve together! (Sorry.)
